Ryan Farquhar rode his Q8Oils lubricated Kawasakis to victory in the Open, Supersport and Supertwins classes at the inaugural Armoy Road Races. Ryan also claimed the lap record in each, bringing his total wins for the season to 52. He not only secured the Irish Road Race and Ulster Road Race Championships for each class, but also took the Duke Road Race Championship too. His joy was overshadowed by a tragic accident in the final Grand Final race that claimed the life of a spectator.
Following an untimed practice session on the brand new 3-mile circuit, grid positions were determined by Championship position, putting Ryan on the front row. In the 5-lap Supersport 600cc race Ryan took the lead from start to finish for his first win of the day. This was followed by a commanding performance in the Open race, in which Ryan set the fastest lap of the day at 107.897mph, crossing the line five seconds ahead of second-placed Guy Martin.
However, this was eclipsed by his victory in the Supertwins race, in which he took the chequered flag almost 20 seconds ahead of his nearest rival. In the Grand Final Ryan led Guy Martin on the Hydrex Honda going into the second lap when the race was stopped due to the an accident further back in the pack, as a result of which the meeting was subsequently abandoned.
Speaking later, Ryan said: "It took a while to get dialled in to the circuit. The left hander after the start and finish is without doubt the fastest corner in road racing - on the big bikes we were going through there flat out in top at about 170mph - and it's a great course to ride. It had been a really good day up until the Grand Final and the accident that happened really marred the day and meeting so my deepest sympathies go out to all the family and friends of the person who lost their life. Up until then I'd taken 3 wins and 3 lap records and the day was going perfectly."
Ryan now turns his attention to the Ulster Grand Prix, where he will be hoping his superb National form carries over to the International stage with the meeting taking place on the famous Dundrod circuit from August 12-15.
